Proposed standard will provide a framework for laboratory consistency.
Apr 10, 2025
ASTM International’s forensic sciences committee (E30) is developing a proposed standard that will aid in the use of chemical analysis in forensics studies.
The proposed standard (WK93983) has its origins in an earlier E30 standard on the validations for seized drugs analysis. The currently proposed standard broadens the original to include information that can be used for chemical analysis across several disciplines.
“The proposed standard will be applicable to laboratories performing chemical testing,” says ASTM member Laura Hernandez, director, Verity Labs, Inc. “It will set consistent requirements from lab to lab on the minimum requirements to validate or verify methods.”
Hernandez notes that the proposed standard will help to establish consistency in the language used to validate and verify methods. This consistency will help a variety of stakeholders, from the labs themselves to accrediting bodies and instrument and reagent manufacturers.
